Behind the Wheel provides road and range teaching techniques. Instructors for Behind the Wheel are required to complete both Classroom Curriculum and Behind the Wheel training.

Instructors currently teaching Classroom Curriculum or Behind the Wheel on a training waiver are required to take this class or classes. Current waivers will expire 10 days after the last day of the class.

Lifesavers is the premier national highway safety meeting in the United States dedicated to reducing the tragic toll of deaths and injuries on our nation's roadways. Starting in the early 1980s, the Lifesavers conference attendance has grown steadily, drawing over 2,400 participants in 2007. Each year, the Lifesavers Conference has become even more relevant and timely, providing a forum that delivers common-sense solutions to today's critical highway safety problems.

     Driver Educator Recertification Classes   
(First Thursday and Friday in June):

These classes will provide 12 hours of continuing education in 4 hour blocks; participants may attend any or all of them and will receive credit in 4-hour blocks. NOTE: You must attend the full 4 hour block in order to receive the CEUs. Mandatory for all Driver Education instructors whose 5 year recertification is due. Meets the 8 hours of required continuing education for: For-Profit Driver Education Instructors, Driving Improvement School Instructors and DWI School Facilitators.

June 5th Workshop:

Another Roadside Attraction-- What To Do When You Are In A Crash or come Upon A Crash.

This workshop will provideinformation and skills practice related to equipping and using an auto first aid kit, opening and supporting an airway, breathing assessment and support, effective chest compressions, bleeding control, recognition of altered mental status, and splinting. Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm each day
Classroom Curriculum offers techniques for teaching in the classroom.

July 21-25- Behind the Wheel

Teaching Techniques:
August 15, 8am-5pm
Cost: $25
This class will help prepare new teachers create effective classroom environments, presentations, and teaching plans. It is mandatory for the following instructors who have not already taken the class:

• Driver Education instructors who do not have a teaching license (see Rule 18.20.3.18F)
• Driving Safety Instructors (see Rule 18.20.8.16F; this may be waived with documentation of a teaching certificate.)
• It is not mandatory for DWI School Facilitators; however, they may take this class to satisfy 8 hours of continuing education.

Anyone who wants to sharpen up their teaching skills is welcome as well.

Advanced DWI Facilitator Training:

Offered by The Change Companies®, New Mexico Traffic Safety Bureau’s collaborative partner and curriculum publisher. Designed for currently certified instructors, this session will focus on advanced facilitation skills for the NM DWI School curriculum. Registration will be handled through The Change Companies®, not through the Institute of Public Law.
